How I Went from Being Dropped by My Agent to Signing with One of the UK’s Top Agencies
Getting Dropped is the Frickin' Worst!
Let's be brutally honest - getting dropped by my agent was humiliating!
As a working actor running sold-out acting workshops, coaching other actors, and auditioning regularly, my professional reputation was a core part of my identity.
Being dropped felt like a gut punch leaving me uncertain about my future in the industry and quite frankly – embarrassed!
But the worst part wasn't just the humiliation. It was the timing.
Timing Couldn't Have Been Worse
This all happened in the middle of the 2023 writer and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Agencies everywhere were battening down the hatches, fiercely protecting the clients they already had. It seemed like no one was expanding their rosters anywhere. Like the entire industry had frozen overnight.
I was genuinely worried my career might be over. All the hard work, credibility, and the identity I'd built around being a working actor and acting coach felt on the brink of total collapse.
Quit or Fight?
Faced with two stark choices: call it quits (maybe open up a coffee shop in the Cotswolds!) or fight! …I decided there was only one real option.
Anyone who knows me well knows I don't take setbacks lying down. It was time to roll up my sleeves and get strategic.
Leveraging My Sales Background
Years before, I had sold flower subscriptions door-to-door (often in the dead of winter!) convincing complete strangers to take a chance on me, someone they'd just met, and sign up for a delivery service they'd never heard of. And I was really good at it! If I could do that, surely I could crack the problem of signing with the right agent.
So, I applied my sales experience directly to my acting career problem. My plan was simple: get clear data, craft a compelling pitch, and methodically execute a step-by-step strategy.
