I studied 80+ self-tapes that booked professional work - here’s what they all had in common...
Self-taping has changed the game - but most actors are still playing by old rules.
Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tapes now pass through casting offices every day.
Often, actors are performing the same script, in the same locked-off medium close-up, trying to stand out in a framework that naturally flattens everything.
And the hardest part is that most actors never get to see the tapes that actually booked!
They're left guessing:
Was it the performance?
The framing?
The first few seconds?
The reader?
The energy?
The choices?
The setup?

The fact is that the self-tape isn’t going anywhere.
So the question is no longer:
“Can you act?”
the question is:
“Can you capture and sustain attention within this new medium - quickly, clearly, and consistently?”
This is not a generic self-tape class.

Self-Tape Mechanics is built around one central question:
What do booking tapes actually do differently?
Over the last few months, I’ve analysed more than eighty self-tapes that led to professional bookings across TV, film, commercials and even theatre.
With the artists' permissions, the current self-tape library includes 60+ booking tapes, paired with commentary and breakdowns.
From the review of all those tapes striking patterns began to emerge!
Patterns in:
how actors start the tape 🎬
how they use the frame 🖼️
how they hold attention 👀
how they make choices 💪
how they handle the reader 🤓
how they make the scene feel alive before the first line 🔥
how they become the protagonist of the tape (even when they’re not technically the protagonist of the scene!) ❤️
This workshop takes those patterns and turns them into a practical system you can apply to your own tapes.
The core frameworks
How to make the opening of your tape feel alive before the scene has even “started.”
Why some tapes feel instantly engaging - and others feel technically fine but forgettable.
How to use framing, stillness, eyeline and physical behaviour to make the viewer lean in.
How to make yourself the centre of the tape’s energy, even when the scene technically belongs to someone else.
How to make the tape feel like a snapshot from a full life, not an actor beginning a scene.
How to use the reader without letting them flatten the performance.
When improvisation helps - and when it makes the tape feel messy, indulgent or unprofessional.
How to stop being overwhelmed by the fact that self-taping now asks you to be actor, director, editor, cinematographer, producer and gaffer all at the same time.
You'll even get to see real-life examples from tapes that have actually booked professional jobs.
...so you can see these principles in action!

4 weeks. 10 actors. Weekly tapes. Live feedback.
Each week you’ll be given a scene to tape.
You’ll upload your self-tape to the private workshop space at least 24 hours before the live session.
Then, inside the 2-hour workshop, we’ll break down:
1. the weekly principles
2. examples from real booking tapes
3. your submitted tapes
4. specific changes that would make each tape more compelling, watchable and (most imporatantly) castable!
Most tapes will be reviewed live during the sessions.
You’ll also be able to watch and respond to the other actors’ work in the group - which is a huge part of the learning.
You won’t just learn from your own tape.
You’ll start to see patterns across everyone’s work.
That is where your eye gets sharper.
The Weekly Breakdown
Week 1 - The First 3 Seconds
How to make casting want to keep watching before the scene has settled.
We’ll look at opening moments, pre-life, energy, behaviour, slates, and the hidden signals that make a tape feel professional and bookable right from the off.
Week 2 - Manipulating the Frame
How to use the camera to make the tape more intoxicating.
We’ll cover framing, eyeline, movement, stillness, reader dynamics, physical behaviour and how to make a simple medium close-up feel dramatically alive.
Week 3 - Choices That Stand Out
How to avoid “competent but forgettable” tapes.
We’ll explore the line between novelty and professionalism, how to make bold choices without forcing them, and how to create a performance that feels specific, surprising and undeniable.
Week 4 - The Repeatable Self-Tape System
How to bring it all together.
We’ll build a repeatable workflow you can use on every tape - from reading the brief to submitting the final file - and you’ll receive the Self-Tape Scorecard to help you assess your own tapes before sending them to make sure you're always giving yourself the best chance of booking the job.
What's included:
4 live 2-hour workshops
Weekly assigned scenes
Weekly self-tape submissions
Live feedback and tape breakdowns
Private workshop space inside Skool
Access to session recordings until 72 hours after the final workshop
Examples from real self-tapes that booked professional work
Free access to the Perfect Self-Tape Setup ebook (usually $29.99)
Self-Tape Scorecard PDF
Access for just £199 / $269

WHY THE GROUP FORMAT MATTERS
You’ll learn faster because you’ll get to see the patterns.
Most actors only ever see their own tapes.
That’s part of the problem.
Inside this workshop, you’ll see how other professional actors approach the same material - what works, what flattens, what hooks attention, what disappears on camera, and what instantly makes someone more watchable.
You’re not just getting notes.
You’re developing taste.
You’re training your eye.
You’re learning to diagnose the tape before you send it.
Who's teaching this?

Hi I'm Dean
You might know me as the guy who gives you no-nonsense tips on acting craft and career on social media.
Over the last 8 years, I’ve helped hundreds of actors reach new levels of excellence in their craft and career.
Actors who’ve worked with me have gone on to secure roles on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV+, Disney+, in the West End, and more.
As an actor myself, I’ve worked across ITV, Channel 4, Sky and the West End.
This workshop brings together my experience as an actor, coach, director and teacher - but more importantly, it’s built around the evidence of what is actually working in tapes that book.
What actors say about working with Dean

WHO THIS IS FOR
This workshop is for actors who:
are early–mid career professionals
have Spotlight, Actors Access or equivalent casting profiles
are actively self-taping, or preparing to tape at a professional level
want more recalls, callbacks and better tape outcomes
feel their tapes are “good” but not consistently landing
want a clearer process instead of guessing every time
This is not about beginner camera basics.
It’s about making your tapes more watchable, more specific, more professional and more likely to move you forward.
WHO THIS ISN'T FOR
This is probably not right for you if:
you’ve never made a self-tape before
you’re looking for basic acting training only
you don’t want to share work in a group setting
you’re not willing to submit weekly tapes
The group will be supportive and constructive, but the work is practical. You’ll get the most from it if you’re ready to tape, watch, adjust and improve.

FAQs
GOT QUESTIONS?
QUESTION
Do I need to be auditioning right now?
ANSWER
No. You’ll be given assigned scenes each week. But this workshop is best suited to actors who are actively auditioning, self-taping, or preparing to tape at a professional level.
QUESTION
ANSWER
The workshop is designed to be constructive, specific and supportive. The aim is not to beat anyone down - it’s to make the work clearer. You’ll also learn tonnes from watching other actors receive notes.
QUESTION
What kinds of roles will we cover?
ANSWER
We’ll look at the different demands of commercials, day-player roles, guest roles and lead material - because not every self-tape is trying to do the same job.
QUESTION
Is this only about acting, or technical setup too?
ANSWER
Both - but the focus is on making the whole tape work. You’ll get access to the Perfect Self-Tape Setup ebook from the start, but the workshop itself goes deeper into performance, framing, attention, psychology and tape strategy.
QUESTION
Will I get feedback on my tapes?
ANSWER
Most tapes will be reviewed live inside the sessions. To be eligible for review, tapes should be uploaded to the group space at least 24 hours before the workshop.
QUESTION
What level is this for?
ANSWER
Early–mid career professional actors. Ideally, you have Spotlight, Actors Access or equivalent, and you’re already auditioning or actively preparing for professional screen opportunities.
QUESTION
What if I miss a session?
ANSWER
Sessions will be recorded and available until 72 hours after the final workshop finishes.
QUESTION
Will I get access to the full booking tape library?
ANSWER
Inside the workshop, we’ll study selected examples from the booking tape research.
Full access to the wider booking tape library, weekly self-tape challenges, monthly casting director spotlights and Dean’s full online course library will be available through The Actors Yard Community after the workshop.
QUESTION
Why is it capped at 10 actors?
ANSWER
Because this only works if the group is small enough for personal feedback, discussion and meaningful comparison between tapes.
Stop guessing what makes a self-tape work.
Learn how to build tapes that hook attention, hold the viewer, and give casting a reason to bring you back in.
